Hortus Conclusus graphite on paper 2013
I made this drawing of myself to look toward a self-portrait drawn by my grandmother when she was close to my age, which has hung in my studio since I returned home from her funeral last autumn. She died during the night on my birthday, or maybe just after. Now our self-portraits can look at each other in the stilled and silent time that drawings inhabit---a kind of eternity to share together. And I look at her and she looks at me as I work beneath her gaze every day.
